An Embrace Beyond Time
Four days a nation embraced its hundred-year-old self.
HARIKALAR · OCTOBER 2023
Brief
2023 marked the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey. A once-in-a-nation's-lifetime moment. Brands would post graphics, agencies would shoot ads, everyone would write the same line.
No brand handed us this brief. We wrote it for ourselves. Because the centennial deserved more protection from cliché than any year before it — not banners, slogans and "happy 100th" graphics, but something that would actually move people, something they couldn't help but share. A personal moment, not a corporate one.
The target was simple: become the experience Turkey would talk about, share and feel the most during the centennial. Not brand communication. A collective memory.
“History ends the moment you step inside it.”
Insight
The centennial isn't a date; it's a feeling of continuity. Every Turk carries the same quiet sentence: "Without them, we wouldn't exist." But that "them" is always far away — frozen in black-and-white photos, posed in textbooks, behind glass. Respect exists. Distance exists.
No one has stood next to Atatürk for a moment. No one has touched a comrade's shoulder in a Çanakkale trench. No one has held a flag on the streets of October 29, 1923.
If we could erase that distance, even for a second — if we could place people inside those moments — history would step out of the textbook and become a personal memory. And what is personal, gets shared.
The Idea
For the centennial we built a custom AI face-swap model that placed every user inside the historical scenes of a hundred years ago.
A user uploaded a single photo. Within seconds the system recognized the face, estimated the age, detected the gender. Then it picked, from our archive of historical scenes — the trenches of the War of Independence, the pier of May 19th, Çanakkale, the crowds around Atatürk, the first hours of October 29, 1923 — the most suitable character for that user. Same age, same gender, same kind of pose.
That character's face was replaced with the user's. The result: you were now standing inside the scene. Three steps behind Atatürk, beside a flagpole, as a soldier with someone leaning on your shoulder.
It wasn't fake, it wasn't parody, it wasn't entertainment — it was an emotional moment. The first time a person saw their own face inside that history, they felt, often for the first time in their life, like they were part of it. And then they shared it.
Face + Age + Gender Matching
Not a generic face-swap. The system recognized the user's face, estimated age and gender, then matched them to the most fitting character in the scene. The result didn't feel fake — it felt like "I was actually there".
Our Own In-House AI Model
No off-the-shelf API in 2023 could deliver this quality. We trained our own face-swap model from scratch and wrote the matching algorithm ourselves. Every gain in quality, speed and emotional impact came from this foundation.
Historical Scene Archive
The War of Independence, May 19th, Çanakkale, the crowds around Atatürk, October 29, 1923. Every scene was hand-picked to mean something to the person standing inside it.
High-Traffic Infrastructure
We built infrastructure that processed 2 million photos in four days, sustained 8,000 concurrent users, held a 207,000-person queue, and rendered 15 photos per second.
Execution
There was no client brief, no budget owner. Only one decision: "We will not stay silent on the centennial." Production took six months — model training, scene archive, matching algorithm, rendering pipeline, web infrastructure.
Technology: in 2023 no off-the-shelf tool could deliver this quality. We trained our own face-swap model. We wrote an additional layer that performed face recognition, age estimation and gender classification. We built our own algorithm to match those results against the metadata of every character in our scenes — age, gender, posture. That match was the root of believability: a face-swap done with the wrong age or gender becomes a parody, but done right it becomes a moment that gives you chills.
Operations: the site went live on the morning of October 26, 2023. The first hours were calm. By evening the spread curve went vertical. By the end of day one the queue was in the thousands. By midday on day two the queue hit 207,000 people and concurrent users passed 8,000. To keep the system standing, server configuration, queue management and the render pipeline were tuned in real time. Fifteen photos per second, four days uninterrupted.

Results
- 2,000,000+ photos generated in 4 days. Turkey's entire social feed filled up — Instagram, Twitter (X), Facebook, WhatsApp.
- 2.5 million unique visitors. A meaningful fraction of the country took part themselves; many more watched.
- 250 million pageviews. In 4 days, for a single campaign.
- A 207,000-person queue. People willingly waited in line — for a digital product, a sight Turkey had never seen.
- 8,000 concurrent users at peak, 15 photos per second, 4 days uninterrupted.
- The #1 conversation in Turkey. Between October 26-30 the campaign was the most-talked-about work in national press, on television and across social media.
- Personal, collective and emotional. Hundreds of thousands of people wrote that, for the first time in their lives, they felt they were "inside" history.
- What no brand managed to do, we did under our own name. No brief, no client, no budget holder — just the right idea.
